Updating Chrome OS 2

For those of you who are having issues updating Chrome OS by the first method, you should be able to update by using the previous method.

Step 1: Download this script.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3emsCFtN3nMczFIUkNyRE56STQ/edit?usp=sharing

Step 2: Open the Dev terminal (CTL+ALT+F2, you may need to hold CTL and alternate pressing ALT and F2).

Step 3: Run the command:
sudo su

Step 4: Log in using 'chronos' as the username, no password should be required, but if so it is 'facepunch'.

Step 5: Run the command:
bash /home/chronos/user/Downloads/1.sh
NOTE: THE CAPITAL D IS IMPORTANT!

Step 6: let the script run, this WILL take quite a while, on a 120Mb connection this will take around 5 minutes.

Step 7: When you are asked to pick a build after they are all listed, pick the build you originally chose or another build if you are confident it will work with your hardware.

Step 8: Allow Chrome OS to be installed, give it half an hour just to make sure. YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A CONFIRMATION MESSAGE! You will know when it has installed correctly as you will not be able to exit the developer console.

Step 9: Once the install has completed, all you need to do it reboot.

Note: Once you have rebooted, you may get a screen displaying a message about a kernel boot, this is nothing to worry about, this screen was originally hidden in Chrome OS. Chrome OS will then boot into your newly updates Chrome OS.

Step 9: Confirm that the update has completed by viewing help section in the settings.

  4. I continue to get a Segmentation Fault (core dump) error when installing the Chrome OS from the development channel. Had always loaded the image in the past, and everything worked fine, but now having issues. Is there one build that is more universal in working with machines. (HP tower)

  5. Not sure what this Segmentation Fault (core dump) error comes from, I face an error to which cause (core dump) as well. For me is all working fine so fare, I use this recovery image: Google Chromebook Pixel which work fine on my home made Chromebox... I think Google Chromebook Pixel recovery image is support wider range of hardware which is in laptop/desktop computers...

  10. Hi Facundo,
Oky then we are on the same page, this is what i allways do when I installing Chrome OS to my home made Chromebox!

1.) Go to this page for download Chromium OS: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/
Choose the latest nightly build 4028 for USB.

2.) Create bootable USB with Chromium OS on!

3.) Start up your pc with USB that have Chromium OS on, and login to Chromium OS and by use of the same account on Chromium as you would use for Chrome OS...

4.) To install Chromium OS to your hard drive do as follow: Use this key cobination Ctrl + Alt + t and crosh command window will popup. Now write in this command her into crosh: install and hit Enter.

5.) Follow the on screen instruction, and when it ask for password use this one her: facepunch
Now Chromium OS will be installed to your hard drive.

6.) Now when installing Chromium OS to your hard drive is finished (It will let you now when is is finished) You must now restart your pc by press down power button so it shuts down.

7.) Start up your pc and login to your account, and use the same as you would do with Chrome OS!

8.)Download the 1.sh script frome the link in step 1 on the top of this page you are on now! When finished continiue to step 9!

9.) Use this key combination her: Ctr + Alt + F2 and it will bring up the Chromium OS "Dev Command Window"

10.) At login to localhost use this username her: chronos (Hit Enter) and the password is: facepunch (Hit Enter)

11.) Now write this command her: sudo su (Hit Enter, and if you must use a password, use this one her: facepunch)

12.) Write this bash command her: bash /home/chronos/user/Downloads/1.sh (Hit Enter)

13.) Now it will download a list of Chrome OS recovery image to choose from, let it download the whole list first and it can take some time before it got the whole list!

14.) Now its time to choose Chrome OS recovery image, and you should try "Samsung Chromebook 5 Series" recovery image since it has same cpu as your pc has a Intel Atom N208 cpu... To choose the image just press the number of the Samsung Chromebook 5 Series recovery image has... (Hit Enter)

15.) Let the recovery image download and be installed! YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A CONFIRMATION MESSAGE! Do not restart your pc before the hard drive lights stops blinking on your pc, then hold down your pc power button to its shuts down...

16.) Start up your pc and now you shuld se Chrome OS starts up and you should be able to log in to your account and enjoy Chrome OS! :)

I can enter crosh but when I type in "install" and hit enter it says: Unknown command:"install".

    Thanks

  12. This could be you actually type "install" and it sould be only like this install
Or it could be you are not use Chromium OS build from this link her: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

      Please help!
      Thanks.

  15. Sure you could try Lime instead of Vanilla build, I think the install command is the same!
Are your pc cpu 32 bit or 64 bit?

  18. Hi Facu,
I don't know what you can do about this issue, but I think it is because of your pc is x86 = 32 bits and most og the Chromebooks today is x64 bits... You could try Chrome OS recovery image for Arm cpu which is mostly 32 bits and support x86 Chrome OS! Or try Google Chromebook Pixel recovery image, not the 2015 one...

  19. Hi Henning,
Thanks again. Looks like the intel atom cpu is i686 and this asks for x86-64.
I´m sticking to chromium for now until I find the right image.
Any other ideas on an image worth the try?
    Another question:
Is there a way to make drive in files work on chromium?
I found this but it seems a bit tricky:https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/#!topic/chromium-os-discuss/VdtPo30b8kU
    Any clues?
    Thanks.
    Have a good one!

  20. So I managed to get it running on the acer ac700 image. It says something on the log on screen regarding. Hardware. Any clues on how to bypass this?
    thanks!

    1. It is mentioned in the main tutorial it is within settings to do with logging in. I can't remember exactly what though so you'll need to give it a read. It is the only means to bypass it as this does not give you a valid chrome number used for security checks on boot.

    I finally made it!
After days of hard work and failing repeatedly I managed to get the Acer ac700 recovery image working on my toshiba mini nb205!!!
This blog has really, really helped me out a lot!
I´ve managed to bypass the start up screen, type in my google credentials and use the brand new chrome os!!!
    Im really happy guys!!
Its a bit slow and laggy. Maybe because its a hdd and the first run. Also only 1 gb ram ddr2. I´m gonna upgrade it to 2gb and put in an ssd.
    Thanks to you all!
    Sethzzs blog is the best!
Henning thanks for all the support!
    Hats off to you Taron!
